Using File Manager to Upload Your Website Files
If you're hosting your website with BDIX NOC or any other cPanel-based hosting provider, File Manager is one of the most efficient ways to upload and manage your website files. File Manager is a web-based interface that allows you to upload, organize, and manage files and directories without needing FTP software.
In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to upload your website files using File Manager in cPanel.
Step 1: Log in to cPanel
- Access your cPanel account by going to
https://yourdomain.com/cpanelor via your hosting provider's dashboard. - Enter your cPanel username and password to log in.
Step 2: Open File Manager
- Once you’re logged in to cPanel, scroll down to the Files section.
- Click on the File Manager icon. This will open the File Manager interface, where you can manage all your website’s files.
Step 3: Select the Directory to Upload Your Files
By default, File Manager will open to the home directory, but for most websites, you'll need to upload your files to the public_html directory.
- In the left sidebar, locate and click on the public_html folder (if you’re uploading files for the main website).
- If you’re uploading files for a subdomain, navigate to the subdomain’s corresponding folder in the home directory.
- Double-click the public_html folder to open it.
Step 4: Upload Website Files
To upload your website files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, etc.):
- In File Manager, click the Upload button located at the top of the page.
- A new tab will open. Click on Select File and choose the files you want to upload from your computer.
- You can also drag and drop files from your computer directly into the upload window.
- Wait for the upload to complete. If you're uploading multiple files, you can upload them in bulk, and they will automatically be extracted into your public_html folder.
Step 5: Organize Your Files
After the files are uploaded:
- Return to File Manager (if you are in the upload tab).
- You will see your uploaded files listed in the public_html directory. You can organize them into subdirectories (like images, assets, css, js, etc.) by:
- Right-clicking on the folder area and selecting Create New Folder.
- Naming the folder (e.g., assets).
- Moving files into respective folders to maintain proper structure.
Step 6: Set Permissions for Your Files
Files uploaded to cPanel may need specific permissions to work correctly on your website:
- Right-click on a file or folder and click Change Permissions.
- Make sure your HTML files are set to 644 (read and write for owner, read-only for others).
- Folders should be set to 755 (read, write, and execute for owner, read and execute for others).
Step 7: Test Your Website
After uploading and organizing the files:
- Open your website by navigating to
https://yourdomain.com(or the subdomain’s URL). - Ensure that all files load correctly, including images, CSS, and JavaScript files.
- If any issues arise, check for typos in file names, missing files, or incorrect permissions.
Step 8: Delete or Replace Files (if needed)
To remove or replace files:
- In File Manager, right-click the file or folder you want to delete or replace.
- For replacing, simply upload the new version of the file.
- To delete a file, right-click and choose Delete, and confirm the action. Make sure to back up important files before deleting them.
Uploading your website files using File Manager in cPanel is an easy and straightforward process. It’s ideal for those who prefer a simple, graphical interface for managing their website without the need for third-party software like FTP clients.
